Rookie councillor Heather Kelly will be Region of Queens Municipality’s next deputy mayor.
Kelly was the only nominee for the position this morning after Milton councillor Jack Fancy withdrew his name from consideration last week. The two previously deadlocked at four votes each Oct. 9, prompting the matter to be deferred until today’s council meeting.
Nominated by councillor Raymond Fiske, Kelly was formally elected by a 6-0 council vote. (Councillors Fancy and Kevin Muise were absent.)
As deputy mayor, Kelly will assume leadership in cases where Mayor David Dagley is absent or otherwise unable to fulfill his duties. She will also be entrusted with certain financial and legal signing authorities on behalf of council.
Kelly will replace Susan MacLeod as deputy mayor Nov. 1 and serve in the position until Oct. 31, 2020.
