Milton councillor Jack Fancy has dropped his bid for deputy mayor of Region of Queens Municipality.
Fancy and council colleague Heather Kelly were deadlocked for the position at the Oct. 9 council meeting. Two rounds of secret voting by council members produced two consecutive 4-4 ties. The matter was put forward to the Oct. 23 meeting in the hope the impasse could be resolved.
Fancy told the Queens Observer he was withdrawing so council could emerge unified from the deputy mayor selection process. “I don’t like division,” he said. “I’ve already sent a message to the rest of council to let them know I’m going to drop my name and support Heather (Kelly).”
Split votes are part of a healthy democracy, Fancy said, but too many can prove counterproductive. “I’m more for working together,” he said.
RQM’s next deputy mayor will replace Susan MacLeod and serve a two-year term beginning in November.
